German Energy-efficient design solutions for China

The current market situation and what we can do now

Tianjin, China, September 17th 2010 – Over 150 delegates including VIP guests Mr. Han Peijun from the Tianjin Construction & Transportation Committee and German Ambassador to China Dr. Michael Schaefer gathered at a conference in Tianjin on September 15th to look at ways China can implement energy-efficient design and construction.

Focus issues discussed covered energy-efficient building; applications of know-how transfer and cost-efficient sustainable design solutions for the china market. Keynote speaker, Mr. Frank Krueger of the German-based architectural and urban design firm logon looked into the impact China’s booming building sector is having on the environment and suggested a framework for sustainable design in China. “Good design” is “sustainable design” and “sustainable design” equals “knowledge intensive design”, said Krueger. Through the right project positioning and sustainability strategy with use of the right combination of sustainability tools “energy consumption can be reduced by 50% in the design phase alone”. “Green architecture in China is the exception with only 48 commercial lead projects” Krueger noted. The logon sustainability strategy is to make every project more sustainable thus creating a larger overall impact on entire China mass market.

According to the World Bank, out of all the buildings to be completed in the world up until 2015, 50% will be built in China. Tianjin is currently undergoing rapid urbanization with development areas such as a new financial district Yujiapu in the Binhai New Area and TEDA; it is on track to becoming China’s next first tier city. “The benefits of sustainable architecture are not only about the energy or resources saving; at the end of the day we aim to improve quality of life of the end-users at this place we live for all of us” Krueger concluded.
